Brief Space.

Had an amazing time painting at the Treasure Island Music Festival last weekend. I arrived in San Francisco the 14th and headed over to Will Rowans new venue Brief Space. Located on the second floor of the Metreon building, 4th and Mission. It’s been a few years since I saw him last and, as usual, I’m impressed. “If I die tomorrow, Ill be O.K. with what I’ve done” He says to me. I nod. William has been promoting the underground for nearly a decade, he Founded Pacific Art Collective, a huge organization of artists from around the world. He has been putting together Art shows and live painting events for a long time. I can only imagine how much work he’s put in to promoting art in the San Francisco area. I got a taste when I agreed to help set up for the Treasure Island Music Festival. The plan was to head to the Island via work van and set up the large plywood walls that we would be painting on. I knew this would be easier said than done. Things were already getting complicated, the canvas’s provided by Montana had not arrived yet and the admission credentials had to be picked up that afternoon. I agreed to watch the gallery with my girlfriend, Danielle while he ran around putting out fires. I peered out the 10 foot floor to ceiling windows that overlooked Mission street and wondered what this space meant for the “now brow” movement. Will had procured an awesome venue on the second story of a mall. I couldn’t help but feel that this was a breakthrough. Will had found a stronghold for the Indie arts, right in the middle of mainstream consumer culture and it felt different.
The boutique was hand painted by Phoneticontrol and his wife, Alice Koswara. Robots hovering and female figures intermingled on the back wall. The Front entrace graces an epic wall by Greg “Pnut” Galinsky. The level of professionalism made this space feel as though it fit right in with the mall. It looked like a legit consumer venue. This environment was hand painted. Truly unique. Hand printed shirts, prints and other products of artistic authenticity. This is the selling point stores like urban outfitters try to imitate in their branding, and it works. Urban outfitters grossed 110.1 million last year. When I explored Urban outfitters later on that evening I saw consumers snatch up products branded to be authentic and unique. It was buzzing with lines to the register. Brief space was real and the space remained quiet with a few visitors over the course of a few hours. Perhaps that’s a good thing.
Mice of Millions is proud to have shirts available at Brief Space.
